Grandmother's Legacy

Why We Started VaHLI

"My grandmother had diabetes. A small cut on her toe — one she couldn't feel — became infected, entered her bloodstream, and stopped her heart. She passed away from something education could have prevented. If someone had shown her — in her language, with simple pictures — she might still be here."

— VaHLI Founder, John C. Kimball High School

❄️
November – February

Flu & Cold Season — Protect Your Family

Winter in San Joaquin County brings flu, RSV, and COVID surges. Indoor air quality also drops as families stay inside with heaters running.

💉 Get Vaccinated

Flu shots are free at Golden Valley Health Centers and most pharmacies. No insurance needed. Ask for the Spanish-language form.

🏠 Indoor Air Quality

Gas heaters and poor ventilation raise indoor pollutants. Open windows briefly each day, even in winter. Carbon monoxide detectors save lives.

👶 RSV Alert

RSV is dangerous for infants and elderly. If a baby under 6 months has rapid breathing or won't eat, go to the ER — don't wait.

💊 Know the Difference

Flu = sudden fever + body aches. Cold = gradual, runny nose. COVID = test first. Valley Fever = cough lasting over 3 weeks after dust exposure.

🌸
March – May

Valley Fever Season — Spring Winds Carry Risk

Spring is peak Valley Fever season. Construction activity and strong winds stir up Coccidioides fungal spores from the soil around Tracy, Manteca, and Stockton.

🌫️ What is Valley Fever? (Fiebre del Valle)

🔍Valley Fever is caused by breathing in fungal spores that live in San Joaquin County soil — especially near Tracy's new construction developments and agricultural areas
⚠️Symptoms look exactly like flu: cough, fatigue, fever, chest pain. Many people are misdiagnosed for months
🏗️Risk is highest near construction sites, farms, and during dust storms — very common in spring around Tracy, Manteca, and Lathrop's rapidly growing areas
🩺If you've had a cough for more than 3 weeks after dust exposure, tell your doctor: "Please test me for Valley Fever, not just flu"
😷Wear an N95 mask (not a cloth mask) when working near disturbed soil or during dust storms
Most people recover without treatment — but immunocompromised patients, pregnant women, and those with diabetes need special monitoring
🍂
October

Wildfire Smoke Season — Protect Your Lungs

October brings wildfire smoke from across California into San Joaquin County. AQI can spike into hazardous levels with little warning, especially dangerous for children with asthma.

🔥 Wildfire Smoke Safety Guide

🔴When AQI is above 150 (Very Unhealthy): everyone should stay indoors. Seal windows with wet towels if needed
🟡When AQI is 101–150: children, elderly, and asthma patients should stay inside. Others limit outdoor time to under 1 hour
😷If you must go outside, wear an N95 mask — cloth masks and surgical masks do NOT filter wildfire smoke particles
🏠Create a clean air room: pick one room, seal the door with a towel, run an air purifier or box fan with a MERV-13 filter
🫁For asthma patients: have your rescue inhaler stocked before October. Check it now — don't wait for a smoke event
